I don’t know about you, but I just can’t keep track of everything that is going on in my life. I have a calendar hanging in the kitchen so we get to where we are supposed to be, but it is the weird and random stuff that goes in one ear and out the other.
Recently in one of my classes, one of the students did a presentation on information scraps. I’m sure you have a ton of them lying within arm’s reach as you read this. They are the Chinese menu with the doctor’s phone number scribbled on it. It’s the Post-it note where you wrote your husband's pants size. It’s the grocery list you shoved in you purse.
I too have these scraps all over my life, but when I’m on the run or have no idea where I could possibly find a pen (better luck finding a crayon sometimes), I default to the Notes app on my iPhone. I looked through it the other day, and there are some really ridiculous things in there, while others are so important to me, I will never delete them.
My current favorite is the list of My Little Ponies toys that we have. I know Pinkie Pie, Rainbow Dash and the other regulars, but thanks to those awful YouTube channels (read more about that craziness here), we have a lot of ponies that came in blind bags and are minor characters with crazy names. Little Miss plays with these tiny ponies in the bathtub, and almost every single night I have to get on my phone and Google, unable to enjoy my kids in the bath, to find pony names, which is not an easy task by the way (Keywords: Pony, Green, Stars, Glasses).
Recently I got fed up and made a note so I don’t have to keep Googling while Mr. Man splashes water all over my phone. I don’t know why I didn’t do it sooner.
I have a note to keep track of how much I spend on my groceries. I have a packing list for an upcoming vacation, a list of summer event dates (movies on the beach!), blog ideas, passwords. I have notes with summaries and ideas for all the various books I want to write.
But the notes that mean the most to me are the ones about the kids. I have a list of all of Little Miss’s first words and first foods and I have the same for Mr. Man. Now that Little Miss never stops talking, it’s fun to take a look back into a time when all she said was Lilo, Stitch, duck and kitty.
And since the Notes are linked to my computer, I don’t have to worry about losing them like I would a random scrap of paper. Basically my information scraps are safe and keeping track of everything for my exhausted memory.
What do you keep in your Notes app? Like me, do you find the long list of notes overwhelming at times and feel the need to delete? I have so many I might need to delete some pictures to make more space!
