Mr. Man turns one this month, and he and his big sister are finally starting to interact on a more friendly level. They share (or fight over) toys and often seem to enjoy each other’s company. And they both seem to be pretty excited about Mr. Man growing up.
My kids love to jump and crawl on the bed and play in their tents together, and they like to take walks in the stroller and run/crawl around outside, but today they got to experience something new, sitting together, side by side in a club store shopping cart.
We got a new BJs near our house and they are just celebrating their grand opening. We used to be Costco members, but Mr. Man was still little when our membership expired. Whenever we went, he would stay in his baby seat in the back of the cart or I would wear him in my Baby K’tan.
Last week we went to a BJs near my parents’ house. I was so excited to put the two of them in the cart next to each other, but when we got there, Mr. Man was passed out in the back of the car. Although under normal circumstances I would jump for joy at his napping skills, I gently tried to wake him up. No avail.
Well today, both kids were awake, Mr. Man wearing one of those white Sherpa jackets with the bear ears that had been handed down from his sister, and Little Miss in a big winter coat and a knitted cat hat, also with ears. We plopped them in the cart next to each other and whipped out the phone camera. Little Miss looked huge, such a big kid, and Mr. Man looked hilariously like a little snow bunny. They both had goofy grins on their faces. Little Miss gave her brother a hug and said, “I’m so glad you grew up and can sit in the cart.” His smile was huge and they both squealed with delight as we pushed them through the cold to the store.
This is what I imagined when we had our second child. I imagined them being friends and experiencing things together. Of course I had imagined vacations and Christmases, but leave it to kids to remind you how important the little things are. We didn’t even need anything at BJs, we just wanted to check out the new store, and those two little kiddos gave us a few precious moments I don’t think I’ll ever forget.
